Kenneth Eugene Starett
In His marvelous grace, God called His faithful servant, Kenneth Eugene Starett, 83, home Tuesday, March 29, 2016. After a beautiful life here on this Earth, he has now entered into his eternal life which is far greater than anything that we could ever think or imagine. He is now with his Heavenly Father whom he loved and faithfully served for many years.
Ken was born August 26, 1932 in Glenville, West Virginia, to Romie J. and Beulah (nee Cather) Starett. After graduation from Weston High School in 1952, he moved to Elyria, where he lived the rest of his life. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Elyria, where he was a Deacon, taught Sunday School, worked with young people and various other activities.
After spending 19 years at Ridge Tool Company, the Lord blessed him with the privilege of becoming an AWANA Missionary for 31 years. He had the opportunity to show many young people the importance of having Jesus Christ as their personal Savior in order to be assured of spending eternity with the God of Creation. This ministry allowed him to crisscross Ohio for 21 years helping churches begin AWANA Clubs to reach their young people for Christ. This was followed by 10 years of the same type of ministry in the Caribbean Islands.
Ken was born with a “pioneer spirit”. He was the first AWANA Missionary in Ohio, conducted the first AWANA Olympics in Ohio, the first AWANA Grand Prix and was the first Director of the AWANA Canadian Adventure Camp. He became a Carlisle Township fireman, serving first as a volunteer and rising through the ranks of full-time Lieutenant, Captain and Active Chief during his tenure. Even in his early years, he spent time as a member of the West Virginia National Guard.
The Lord blessed Ken with many special people along the way: his “bride” of 63 years, Mary Louise (nee Smith); daughter, Susan Warner Taylor (the late Douglas Taylor); sons, Don (Pam Schott), Larry (Becky) and Roger (Diane); 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews beloved friends and a sister, Helen (Art) Miller.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by a brother, Edward “Bud” Starett and son-in-law, Douglas Taylor.
Friends will be received Friday, April 1, 2016 from 4 to 8 P.M. at First Baptist Church, 11400 LaGrange Road, Elyria. Friends will also be received Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 10 until the time of an 11 A.M. service in the church. Senior Pastor Reverend Patrick Odle will officiate. Burial will be in South Murray Ridge Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to AWANA, 1 East Bode Road, Streamwood, IL 60107-6658. Please note that the donation is made in memory of Ken Starett.
Arrangements are in the care of Dicken Funeral & Cremation Service, Elyria.
